Caroline's Voyage

East Coast or West?

A sailor from the West Coast says I should start my voyage from there. Is that a good idea?

  • That is a tough decision. Both would involve sailing through the hurricane zone, but this is October and the season is almost over. If you sail down the west coast, say from Seattle, there are not many places to duck in if the weather threatens. On the Atlantic side you have lots of places unless you head right away for Bermuda, but even that is not a long way by west coast standards.

The big advantage to going west is you're already in the Pacific and much closer to the South Seas and you don't havve to go through the Panama Canal until you come back around.

It's tough. I'd take the western route, but I'm prejudiced.

    Signed, Mark

What kind of sailboat?

The only boat I've been offered is a trimaran. Should I hold out for a more traditional  monohull, or am I just being old fashioned?
  • Do you think the trimaran is beautiful? Would you want to spend 40,000 miles on a boat you can't completely love?

  • Speed v. load carrying - which is most important to you?

Catnapping

I'm thinking of taking along a kitten. Tania Aebi took one on her sail around the world. Should I, or not?
  • Who is Tania Aebi?
